Designed to show dogs we want as guardians in our program

Welcome to Audet's Guardian Dog Page

This page is designed to show dogs we would like to find guardian homes for. Guardian homes are very similar to fostering to adopt. Audets Mini Dachshunds retains full ownership and breeding rights to the dog. The dog is under a lcontract to come visit us for breeding purposes. This allows us to bring in new genetics.

About Audet's Guardian Homes

What is a Guardian Home?

A Guardian Home is an arrangement where a breeder places one of their breeding-quality dogs with a family to live as a pet, while the breeder retains breeding rights.

How a guardian home works

  • Ownership: The breeder keeps legal ownership of the dog.
  • Living situation: The dog lives full-time with the guardian family as a household pet.

  • Breeding rights:
    • If female: she returns to the breeder for heat cycles, breeding, pregnancy, and whelping. (3-4 months)
    • If male: he may visit the breeder for stud services. (1-5 days)

  • Costs: The guardian family often receives the dog at a discount and may have some veterinary expenses covered (terms vary).
  • Transfer of ownership: After the dog completes its breeding career (per legal contract) and is spayed/neutered, full ownership will be transferred to the guardian family.

Why breeders use guardian homes

  • Maintains a small, home-raised environment rather than a large kennel.
  • Expands breeding programs without overcrowding.
  • Ensures dogs get daily family life and socialization.

  • Must carry pet insurance.
  • Be available for breeding-related needs on short notice.

Looking for a Guardian

2026 Looking for a Guardian

We have added Archie to our breeding program. This male would be used on our wirehair females only. Currently we only have 2 mini wire females but that could change in the future.  This means this future Stud would need to visit us 4 times per year. (Usually only for 2-3 days). Guardian is responsible for bring the dog to us for breeding and picking the dog back up. (You would have a minimum of 5 days notice). Must live within 1.15 hr from East Dover VT. This stud contract would be for 5-9 years (based on guardian preference).
